Five Things We Learned About the Garbage Can Cleaning Business in Year One
After completing our first year at Advanced Can Cleaners, we're pulling back the curtain to share the five most valuable lessons we learned in the garbage can cleaning business.
Starting a local business in Westchester County, NY, is a journey filled with steep learning curves and rewarding milestones. After completing our first year at Advanced Can Cleaners, we wanted to pull back the curtain and share the most valuable lessons we've learned. Whether you are a fellow entrepreneur or one of our neighbors curious about how the "magic" happens, here are the five pillars that defined our first year.
1. Social Media is Our Community Hub
We quickly discovered that social media isn't just for fun; it's a powerful tool for connection. In fact, social media was the primary driver for 75% of our customer base this year. We learned that staying consistent—posting 2-3 times a week and sharing 2-3 stories—keeps us connected with our neighbors. By occasionally boosting these posts, we've been able to reach families across Westchester who didn't even know a solution for smelly bins existed.
2. Practice Makes Perfect
There is a big difference between knowing how to clean a bin and mastering the craft. We spent our early days practicing relentlessly to ensure our service was top-tier. By cleaning for friends and family, we were able to refine our process and increase our speed without sacrificing quality. A bonus lesson? Having those family members share their honest experiences on social media helped build the trust we needed to grow.
3. Patience is a Virtue in Sales
While we'd love to help every home in New York overnight, we've learned that large-scale success is built over time. Securing major contracts with Homeowners Associations (HOAs) requires a dedicated, long-term strategy rather than a quick win. We've committed ourselves to building consistent relationships with property management companies across the county. We've found that even when the timing isn't right, it's a great opportunity to connect on LinkedIn, share our literature, and remain a helpful resource for when their needs change next season.
4. Friendliness is Our Secret Sauce
At the end of the day, we are a service business, and that means being a good neighbor. We make it a point to be friendly with every person (and every dog!) we pass while working. We've found that being approachable with a business card or a flyer ready is helpful, but nothing beats a live demonstration. Showing a curious neighbor exactly how our high-heat system works is the best way to prove the value of the service.
5. Mastering the Rig
If our equipment doesn't work, we can't serve you. We've learned that a "can-do" attitude must extend to mechanical repairs. From leaking seals to failing trailer lights or dead batteries, we've learned to expect the unexpected and be prepared for repairs at the worst moments. While we rely on professional servicing during the learning phase to stay in business, mastering our pressure washing rig is a top priority to ensure we never miss a scheduled cleaning.
We are so grateful for the support Westchester has shown us in year one, and we can't wait to see what year two brings!
